Today I looked over the Wallulahs on drobo and decided to re-scan 1994 and 1995.  I am not sure if there are more which have the same problem as I noticed in these two (if there is I can re-scan those in January).  I was able to scan and begin to edit both 1994 and 1995.  I will finish them in January.

Last Day :(

Today is my last day working in the Digital Production Lab and I was able to finish processing the 1966 Wallulah. I'm sorry we didn't get all the Wallulahs completed but hopefully I did make some significant progress and they'll be done soon.

I also re-scanned an image for the 1947 Wallulah and placed it in drobo > Temp > "1947 Wallulah-Page143 Rescan." I named the processed files "Page_145" because that seemed to be the missing file name in the original folder.

I'm so grateful for the opportunity to work here (especially even though I graduated) and I've really enjoyed my time a lot. Thank you so much for everything!

Wednesday

On Wednesday I finished 1964 and only have a couple more pages left to process in 1965.

Tuesday, August 2, 2016

Landscape Layout :(

Today I finished 1963 and made considerable progress on 1964. I have around 20 pages of 1964 left to complete tomorrow. It's taking a bit more time in these last pages since they designed all the athletic team pages in landscape rather than portrait. The software can't read the rotated text as well and it's even difficult for me to read on the computer screen, but hopefully this doesn't persist as a trend in the next couple yearbooks.

Multitasking Monday

Today I did a couple varied projects. I started the day by scanning poems from a former Willamette Russian professor which were compiled into one PDF file. I also scanned two more pictures for the Athletic Department Hall of Fame. Finally, I resumed work on the Wallulahs.

I finished 1962 and am over halfway finished with 1963. I noticed that they've been using the university motto as kind of a theme for the 1963 Wallulah, however it's worded differently than when we encounter it today. In the 1963 Wallulah it's phrased as "We Are Not Born Unto Ourselves Alone" whereas today the motto is commonly cited "Not Unto Ourselves Alone Are We Born." I wonder what prompted this change in phrasing and I'm curious if there's been multiple iterations of the motto throughout Willamette's history. The 1963 Wallulah is the first time I've really noticed extensive use of the motto though so any additional changes may only appear in later yearbooks from the 1970s, 1980s, or 1990s.

Thursday

I finished up 1960 as expected and have continued on to 1961. I have around 75 pages left to complete in 1961 so it seems as though I'll keep at my pace of finishing one Wallulah per day and complete it tomorrow.
Today I continued to look through the Student Handbooks and made some edits to those who needed corrections.  I also scanned and edited some pictures for Amber. I will see you all again in a couple of weeks.

Wednesday, July 27, 2016

Today I continued to edit the Student Handbooks.  I was able to finish editing them and am currently double checking that they all look good and making some changes to some.

Wednesday

On Wednesday, I finished 1959 and made considerable progress on 1960. I have around 82 pages left to process so I'm hoping to complete it tomorrow.

Moving on to 1959 and Margaret Mead

I completed 1958 today and started on 1959.

I also re-scanned page 67 from the 1921 Wallulah (titled 1922) and placed it in drobo > Temp > "Wallulah 1921 (titled 1922). In the folder there should be tif and jpg scans of the page along with a "Processed" folder containing the output from ABBYY.

The page was titled "page074" in the original tif and jpg folders so I re-named the newly scanned images to match. For the processed files, the drobo name converted to "Page_075" in the number scheme and this number was missing from the original Processed folder.

I also found out that the famed anthropologist Margaret Mead spoke at Willamette's commencement ceremony in 1959. According to the yearbook, she was challenging Willamette to reject the status quo. I think most of her work is considered outdated now, but we did study some of her research in literary theory and it's cool to imagine her vising WU. It's also nice to start seeing tidbits of progressive thinking documented in the Wallulah, since it's such a distinctive part of Willamette's character in the present-day.
Today I continued to edit the Student Handbooks. I have two left from Box 37 that I will finish tomorrow.

Monday, July 25, 2016

Starting 1958

I finished processing the remaining pages of 1956, along with completing 1957 entirely. I was also able to make some headway on 1958.
Today I continued to edit the Student Handbooks.  I also scanned and edited some pictures for Shanel which I was able to finish.

Two Books, One Day

Today I finished 1955 and essentially all of 1956. I need to process 3 more pages from 1956, but I don't think that will take much time.

Two pages were damaged—someone's portrait was ripped out—so I'm going to need to borrow an Archives copy tomorrow. I'm always curious who vandalizes these periodical copies of the yearbook, because it's something I could never even fathom doing.

I can never tell if the culprit tears out their own picture of that of someone else, and whether it's inspired by something heartfelt, like wanting a keepsake (although that's not the way to go about it) or something more sinister like trying to remove someone from the yearbook. I guess we'll probably never know but I am grateful we have secure back-up copies.
Today I continued to edit the Student Handbooks.  I should be finished by next week.

Wednesday, July 20, 2016

Today I was able to finish scanning the Student Handbooks from Box 37 and I began to edit them.

Wednesday

Yesterday I finished 1954 and started on 1955. I'm currently working on the index and have around 20 pages remaining so I think I'll finish it tomorrow.

Tuesday, July 19, 2016

Today I finished editing the last handbooks I had left of Box 36. I also scanned Mary Eyre's Commencement Address for Amber.  I then began to scan the handbooks of Box 37.

Monday, July 18, 2016

Nearing the Finish of 1954

I'm nearly done with 1954. I've got one index page of names to complete along with 15 or so additional pages which I'm hoping to finish tomorrow.
Today I continued to edit the Student Handbooks.  I have two left that I will finish tomorrow.

Friday, July 15, 2016

Friday

Today I finished 1953 and completed over half of 1954. Next week, after finishing 1954, I think I'll go up to the Archives for a change of pace.

Thursday, July 14, 2016

Today I continued to edit the Student Handbooks. I should be able to finish them by Monday.

Wednesday, July 13, 2016

Wednesday

Unfortunately, I didn't find anything particularly noteworthy in today's 1953 Wallulah pages to share but I did make significant progress. I only have one more batch of images to run through ABBYY so I'm expecting to finish tomorrow.
Today I continued to edit the Student Handbooks.  It should take about a day or two more to finish what I have left.

Tuesday, July 12, 2016

Today I continued to edit the Student Handbooks.  I could possibly finish editing by the end of the week.

Cat Cavern: Campus Hotspot

Sorry I forgot to write a blog post yesterday! I finished 1951 yesterday and made significant progress on 1952, which I finished early this morning. I've also updated the spreadsheet with all the years I've completed.

Now I'm working on 1953 which is a little slower than the last couple years since there's a lot of slanted text. Today I learned that Cat Cavern has actually been a feature of Willamette's campus since the 1950s. It was originally a diner restaurant complete with sodas and sundaes. I'm a little saddened it lost its zest as a popular hangout, but it's interesting to imagine it as the former equivalent to our present-day Bistro.

Monday, July 11, 2016

Today I worked on editing the Student Handbooks.  I still have some left to do, so it could possibly take a couple more days.

Friday, July 8, 2016

Friday

Today I continued working on the 1951 Wallulah. I only have seven more pages left to process so I'm planning on finishing soon!
Today I was able to finish scanning the Student Handbooks that I had left.  I only need to edit them and then input them into the spreadsheet.

Cleaning and Completing 1950

Today I finished 1950 and have moved on to 1951.

We also cleaned the Digital Production Lab as part of the annual library "clean-up" day. I focused on cleaning the Beast's platten and used the new Novus scratch-remover we ordered. There's still a bit of streaking even though I tried to buff it out but I think that may just be a characteristic of the plastic itself. All in all, the Novus plastic cleaning products seem to work well so I think they were a good investment.
Today I continued to work on the Student Handbooks.  I mostly was editing today, tomorrow I will go back to scanning the ones I have left to do.

Wednesday, July 6, 2016

Today I was able to get through halfway of the current box of Student Handbooks that I am working on.  I could possibly finish with the box by the end of the week or the beginning of next.

Tuesday, July 5, 2016

Today I finished editing the Ethiopian Prayer Book.  I went back to work on the Student Handbooks.  I began to scan a new box, and was able to complete scanning about 4 books.

Thursday, June 30, 2016

Thursday

On Thursday I finished the 1949 Wallulah and have now moved on to 1950. I think 1949 was a bit larger because it seemed to include more activity pages and more advertisements but thankfully it went pretty quickly through ABBYY. 1950 is a bit shorter and seems to be going at an equally fast pace so I'm hoping this is a trend that continues as the years progress.

I also managed to re-scan the two pages from the 1980 Wallulah so I'll return 1980 and 1948 (which I borrowed a while ago) to the Archives tomorrow.
Today I was able to finish the first box of the Student Handbooks.  They are all located in the Archives Folder.  I also began scanning the Ethiopian Prayer Book, which I was able to finish scanning but still need to edit it.

Wednesday, June 29, 2016

Today I was able to finish editing the Student Handbooks.  I am currently re-numbering them, and adding them to the spreadsheet, as well as transferring them.

Tuesday, June 28, 2016

1949: A Weighty Wallulah

I finished 1948! I've moved on to 1949 which is a whopping 330 pages so it'll be the longest year book yet. I've still yet to re-scan the pages from the 1980 Wallulah since they were too large to fit on the Plustek (a.k.a. Feynman), so I'll either wait for the Beast to be available or I'll try scanning them on Gregor tomorrow.
Today I continued to work on the Student Handbooks.  I was able to finish scanning the first box, I just need to go back and edit them.

Monday, June 27, 2016

Monday

On Monday I finished up processing the first round of pages from the 1948 Wallulah and began to rescan the fourteen pages which had significant portions of cut-off text. I also re-processed images from the third 1971 Norma Paulus scrapbook though the ABBYY software this afternoon. Tomorrow, after editing the newly scanned images for 1948, I'll re-process them through ABBYY and then I should be able to move on to 1949.
Today I continued to work on the Student Handbooks.  I should be done with scanning the first box by the end of the week.

Friday, June 24, 2016

1948

I'm making headway on 1948. I've got around 32 pages left to process in addition to 14 pages I need to re-scan since names were cut off in the image. I'm hoping to finish 1948 on Monday.

Thursday, June 23, 2016

1946 Complete!

I was finally able to finish 1946 today since the Archives copy was in much better condition. I continued working on 1948 and found a missing page so I had to borrow an Archives copy of that yearbook as well. 1948 is a much longer yearbook since it's about 300 pages and I think I'm around halfway done. I'm hoping to make significant progress tomorrow when I come in to make up hours.
Today I continued to work on the Student Handbooks.  I believe I should be able to finish the box by sometime next week.

Wednesday, June 22, 2016

Finishing Up the Forties

Today I finished 1947 and moved on to 1948. I've noticed these next two yearbooks are a little larger so they might take me more time. Tomorrow I plan on going up to the Archives to check if their copy of 1946 is in any better condition. If so, I'll scan and re-process the two Index pages, which were damaged in the Periodicals copy, and then I'll be done with 1946 as well.
Today I continued to scan and edit the Student Handbooks.  I am about halfway done with Box 35.

Tuesday, June 21, 2016

Tuesday

The Archives was closed today so I couldn't retrieve a better copy of the 1946 Wallulah. Instead, I started work on 1947. I think it recognized the type better in this yearbook because I seemed to blaze through it. I only have 42 pages left to process in addition to some re-scans.
Today I continued working on the Student Handbooks.  I was able scan about 7 or so and I finished editing 4 of them.  I will continue to work on these tomorrow.

Monday, June 20, 2016

1946

Today I nearly finished 1946, however I found that some of the index pages in the Periodicals copy appear to have been damaged or decayed. This obscured several names on a couple index pages so I'm going to re-scan them if the Archives has a copy that's in better shape. I think I only need to red- 2-3 pages though, so it shouldn't take too long and then I'll be moving on to 1947.
Today I was able to complete the blue binder of Chuck Williams.  I went back to working on the Student Handbooks and was able to finish scanning one more.

Friday, June 17, 2016

June 17

I decided to keep working on the Wallulahs rather than go up to Archives. I'm waiting until I finish the 1940s since I didn't want to break the momentum I have going. I'm about halfway through 1946.

I also attempted to clean the platten on the Beast this morning. The cleaner seemed to work pretty well but it didn't touch the scratches so we've ordered some new scratch cleaner to try.
Today I was able to complete renumbering all of the Scenes.

Thursday, June 16, 2016

1945 Finished!

Today I finished the 1945 Wallulah. I've put 1946 through the Scanning Station, but I think I might go up to the Archives tomorrow for a change of pace. I still need to clean the platten on the Beast so I think I'll get that done first.
Today I almost completed renumbering all of the Scenes.  I have about 8 left to do so I should be able to finish them by tomorrow.

Wednesday, June 15, 2016

Finished with '44!

I've finally completed the 1944 Wallulah and have moved on now to 1945. It doesn't appear to have the same issue with content close to the binding so hopefully I don't have to re-scan and re-process as many pages this time around.
Today I continued to renumber the Scenes and I hope to be done with them by tomorrow.

Tuesday, June 14, 2016

Behavioral Troubles with the Beast

I'm still finishing up 1944 and have around 6 images left to edit before I process the 25 re-scanned pages through ABBYY. I encountered some trouble with the Beast today, specifically the BookDrive software, which significantly slowed the procedure. SanJuana informed me it had been acting pretty slow when she used it earlier this week as well. The cameras kept stalling and weren't actually capturing any images so rather than restarting the computer and trying again I just used Feynman. I forgot that I need to clean the platten on the Beast so if I get to that this week I'll try running the software again as well in order to establish if the glitches I experienced today were just a one-time problem.
Today I continued to change the Page Numbers of the Scenes.  I got through a couple of them today so it should not take much longer to finish, about a day or two.

Monday, June 13, 2016

Monday

Today I continued working on the 1944 Wallulah. I didn't quite as far as I'd hoped since I got pretty tripped up by all the text-heavy index pages. However, I only have one more index page to finish tomorrow in addition to the 25 "redo" pages with cut-off text and pictures.

Finally Friday

Oops, I just realized I wrote a draft of my blog post for Friday but forgot to hit "send." On Friday I continued processing the 1944 Wallulah. I only have around 35 pages left to process in the first run, but this portion includes all the index pages so it'll take a bit longer. Then I also have around 25 pages to rescan, edit, and re-process in order to capture all the text and/or photographs on the page.

This week has been so chaotic with all the housing confusion so I'm hoping to have somewhat of a fresh start on Monday and finish 1944 completely.

Thursday, June 9, 2016

Cutting It Close

I finished the 1943 Wallulah and have moved on to 1944. The binding is really tight on this yearbook and many of the photos and text are cut-off or nearly lost in the center-fold. I've found around 20 pages so far that could be re-scanned to include more of the page though so it seems like this Wallulah may take a little extra time.
Today I completed the Chuck Williams Scrapbooks.  I began to scan the Student Handbooks and completed about 5 of them.  I also began to change the numbering on the Alumnus volumes which I corrected about 3 or 4 of them and will continue on Monday.

Wednesday, June 8, 2016

Wednesday Wallulah Work

I've finished all of 1943 except for three pages which I need to re-process through the software, so I should have that complete early tomorrow. Then on to 1944!
Today I almost completed Scrapbook C of Chuck Williams.  I was able to finish scanning all of the pages I just need to finish editing them.  It will probably just take a couple of minutes or so to finish tomorrow.

Tuesday, June 7, 2016

Today I was able to finish Scrapbook B of Chuck Williams.  I began to scan Scrapbook C and will probably need one more day or two to finish it.

Monday, June 6, 2016

Today I almost completed with Scrapbook B of Chuck Williams.  I have a few pages left to scan and edit and should be done by tomorrow and start on Scrapbook C.

Friday, June 3, 2016

Friday

This afternoon I continued working on the 1943 Wallulah. I think I'm well over halfway done since I've only got around 65 pages left. However, some of those pages are from the Index so I'm expecting those will take a little longer again, but I'm planning on having it finished early next week.
Today I was able to finish Scrapbook A of Chuck Williams and I began to scan and edit Scrapbook B.

Thursday, June 2, 2016

Willamette in Wartime

I finished 1942! I'm now working on the 1943 Wallulah. I didn't get as far as I'd like since I was dealing with housing issues throughout the day, but I'm hoping to make up for lost time tomorrow and stay the full day until 4:30PM.

I've noticed in this yearbook particularly how much Willamette changed during World War II. It seems the entire undergraduate curriculum was streamlined to enable men and women to serve in the military after graduation. I can't imagine that type of transformation occurring today and I'm starting to appreciate more how the Wallulahs document the growth and changes of Willamette's character.
Today I almost finished scanning and editing Scrapbook A of Chuck Williams.  I have a couple of pages left which I should be able to complete tomorrow and start on Scrapbook B.

Wednesday, June 1, 2016

Almost Through with 1942

I'm nearly done processing the 1942 Wallulah. I wanted to finish today but I forgot how tedious the index pages can be. I only have around 10 pages left though (and half of them are blank) so there's no doubt I'll finish early tomorrow and hopefully complete a considerable portion of 1943 as well.
Today I continued to scan and edit Chuck William's scrapbook.  I was able to get through more than half of the scrapbook today so I could possibly finish with one tomorrow.

Tuesday, May 31, 2016

Farewell Photoshop, Hello ABBYY

Today I finally finished editing all the images from the Common Book of Prayer. I resumed processing Wallulahs by putting the pages through the ABBYY OCR software for the rest of the day. I'm working on 1942 right now and have completed approximately half the book so I'm hoping to finish it up tomorrow.
Today I continued working on scrapbook A of Chuck Williams.  As I was scanning the pages I also started to edit them.  Since the scrapbook has many pages it will probably take a couple of days to complete.

Thursday, May 26, 2016

Thursday

I'm still working on the scans from the Common Book of Prayer but I've only got around 75 left so the finish line is definitely in sight. Today I also processed the two Norma Paulus scrapbooks we completed this week with the ABBYY software. Speaking of ABBYY, I anticipate resuming the Wallulahs next week once I finish the scans.
Today I finished scanning and editing the Wallulah yearbooks (1973 & 1974).  I also deleted the old files and replaced them with the new scans.  I went to archives to get the scrapbooks of William Chuck and I began to scan scrapbook A.

Wednesday, May 25, 2016

Continuing the Common Book of Prayer

This morning I was able to re-scan the pages which had been previously captured out of focus so the scanning of the Common Book of Prayer is complete. I'm still editing the images and I've completed around 400 now so there's approximately 185 left to finish.

I'm still waiting to hear back on how the scans should be edited which could prolong the process. So far, I have been making the scans more representative of the experience of reading the book by leaving the binding and other edges of pages in the image. However, the alternative would be to make the scan a "cleaner" image by removing the binding and other pages seen in the image in order to focus solely on the page itself.
Today I finished editing and renaming the files for Scrapbook #3 of Paulus and also converted the files into JPEG.  I began scanning Wallulah 1974 yearbook and will continue to do so tomorrow.

Tuesday, May 24, 2016

Endless Editing

Today I continued to edit scans from the Common Book of Prayer. I've completed 250 of them so I'm almost at halfway. It'd be really nice if I could finish this by the end of the week.

I wasn't able to scan the remaining pages of the book today as planned but we've rescheduled for tomorrow. I spent some time setting-up the scanner and focusing it this morning, but I'll make sure to check it's ready tomorrow as well.
Today I finished editing Paulus Scrapbook #12.  I also scanned and edited some loose photos of Norma Paulus, which I added to Folders 7 & 8.  I began working on editing the Paulus Scrapbook #3 which has about 200 scanned pages so it will possibly take another day or so since I completed about a 1/4 of them today.

Monday, May 23, 2016

Today I scanned both Paulus scrapbooks and began editing one of them.  Katie helped me figure out how to work the scanning machines and how to edit the images as well.  The third scrapbook took a while to scan since it contained different texts within a page and they all needed to be captured.  I will continue to edit the scrapbook that I began and I will also probably start editing the remaining one.

Day 1 in the Digital Kingdom

Today was our first day of summer in the Digital Kingdom. At the start of the day, I taught SanJuana how to use the Beast (and all its software), Gregor (i.e. the Epson scanner), and some basic Photoshop skills.

We've made a little progress on the loose Norma Paulus photos, which I think will be good additional practice after the two Paulus scrapbooks are complete.

While SanJuana worked on the scrapbooks, I was able to begin editing the Common Book of Prayer scans and completed around 90 of them. After scanning the remaining pages of the book tomorrow, I'm hoping to continue to make progress on editing the images since there's nearly 600 of them.

Friday, April 15, 2016

April 15

Today I finished editing all of the Nelson Sandgren slides. I'm still in the process of going back through the images and finding more information about each artwork. I've also started back up on the Norma Paulus photos.

Wednesday, April 13, 2016

Sandgren Slides Tan Box Update

Today I finished editing all of the Nelson Sandgren slides from the tan box, but there are a couple which need to be re-scanned. I know these scans were needed as soon as possible so I'm going to come in tomorrow to finish them up and then on Friday I'll begin working on the slides in the white box.

Friday, April 8, 2016

Friday

Today I continued scanning and editing the Nelson Sandgren slides. I've scanned all the slides from the longer tan box but still need to edit them and start on the white box.

We were also able to see the seventeenth century prayer book/bible that I'll be scanning soon. Thankfully it fit well under the polycarbonate cover on the ATIZ. Since it doesn't need to be completed until late May, we're going to pick a day after graduation in mid-May when I can work for a full day scanning the entire book so it won't need to be kept overnight in the digital kingdom.

Scanning Solution

Today we finally figured out to scan the slides with the Epson scanner (Gregory). We found that by unchecking "Thumbnail," you can choose the areas of the preview image which you'd like to scan. You can create multiple "Marquees" which makes the process a little faster and allows you to scan 15 at once.

During the scanning downtime, I finished the 1941 Wallulah which had been partially complete for a while now.

The images of the slides are taking a little longer to edit in Photoshop since most of the photographs of the paintings are at odd angles. It takes a bit of rotation and maneuvering to figure out the ideal angle which enables me to get rid of the black slide-holder border but retain the photograph.

Wednesday

Today I continued experimenting with different scan settings in order to capture the entire image on the slide. There's really not many settings I can manually control and it wouldn't scan without the black frames holding the slides. I tried looking up the problem online as well and I couldn't find any answers. I did try decreasing the resolution to 1200, 600, and 300. 600 seemed to capture the most of the image without compromising quality that much but I can continue to search for ways to scan them at 2400. Since I had quite a bit of downtime while the machine was scanning, I started back on finishing up the 1941 Wallulah, which I hope to finish soon.

Sandgren Slide Difficulties

I realized I forgot to write a blog post about my shift this afternoon. I began scanning the Nelson Sandgren slides, however I'm having the same trouble I did at the beginning of the year where the scanner doesn't recognize the shape or location of the slide and the image comes out wrong. I was able to fill out some information on the spreadsheet but I'm going to have to redo the thirty slides I tried scanning today. I'll look back through old blog posts to figure out what I did to make it work correctly. I think I might have had to scan fewer at a time and place them in a certain position in order to get the scanner to cooperate.

Friday Before Spring Break

Today I finished Folder 6 in the Norma Paulus collection and started scanning and editing the photos in Folder 7. I noticed there was no photo "NP143" in Folder 7. I'm not sure if it's misplaced or if there was a mistake in numbering but I may find it as I continue scanning photos in Folder 7 since there are quite a few.

I won't be here over spring break so I'll resume working on Folder 7 when I get back on Monday, March 28.

Progress on Paulus Photographs

Today I completely finished Folder 5 and scanned all the images for Folder 6. There weren't many photos in Folder 6 so I'll finish editing those Friday and start on to Folder 7.

Finishing Folder 4

I finished scanning all the Paulus photos from Folder 4 today, however I still have a couple more images to edit before it's complete. I'll definitely be able to finish on Monday and hopefully make significant progress on Folder 5.

There was a photo that was between NP092 and NP094 that was label "NP063" rather than NP093, however I had already scanned an NP063 from Folder 3 so I think this is a mistake. I named the file NP093 just for clarity but should the number be changed on the actual photograph as well?

Paulus Photos Update

Today I finished the Bush House Art Museum scanning request and the specific photos from the Paulus collection chosen by Mary. The Paulus photos are in their respective folders within "Loose Photos" in JPEG and TIFF format. The image not from the photo folders is just placed by itself in "Loose Photos."

I also finished Folder 3 and will move on to Folder 4 on Friday. There were a couple images that had captions or were in a postcard-like format so I made two versions: one with the extra material and one that was just the photograph. If one of these versions is unnecessary though, I can delete it on Friday.

Monday

Today I continued to digitize on the Paulus photographs and completed both the first and second folder. I am about midway through the third folder and plan to continue on Wednesday.

Paulus and Photoshop Problems

After finishing a quick scan for Mary, I started digitizing the Norma Paulus photograph collection. I was able to scan all of Folder 1 "Political" however Adobe Photoshop has been uncharacteristically slow so I wasn't able to finish editing all of the photos. Photoshop keeps "not responding" every time I open a new image file which is really frustrating and, unfortunately, slows down the process significantly.

*Also, I have been naming the image files after the photographs ("NP001, NP002, ...") which don't restart and continue over from folder to folder. If this isn't suitable though, I can easily change the file names.

Little Wives of India Finished!

Today I finished editing the images for the ILL book The Little Wives of India. The finished images are in tif and jpeg format in drobo in the folder "The Little Wives of India." Next week, unless any other special projects come up, I assume I'll be resuming work on the Wallulahs which I haven't worked on in a while.

Almost Done

Today I scanned a two pages that were missing from the 1975 Wallulah and continued work on The Little Wives of India. Since I took the afternoon off, I wasn't able to finish today as I had planned but there are only 15 pages left to edit and then I need to retrieve some of the original files to edit for about 10 more pages.

Next week on Monday and Wednesday I'll be making up exercise classes from 10:30-12:30 both days so I will be in Wednesday from 3:00-5:00PM and for both my shifts on Friday.

Productivity

Today I scanned and cropped a couple Packwood documents for Mary. I also scanned a photo of a former dean of AGSM which was in a booklet. After completing these, I resumed working on the Little Wives of India and have around 50 images left to edit.

Monday

I continued working on polishing the images for the book The Little Wives of India today. I have around 60 images left to edit. There are some which I might have to re-scan or retrieve the original captured image since it seems the auto-crop cut off a portion of the book. I should be finished before the end of the week.

Friday

Today I began editing all the images in Photoshop. They require some additional de-skewing and cropping since the close binding of the book made the images irregular. I completed 63 of 168 so far so I'm planning on finishing soon sometime next week.

Progress

Today I finished scanning the entire book The Little Wives of India. I also processed them through Book Drive Editor Pro, however I'll probably need to tweak each image in Photoshop which I plan to do on Friday. Also, the plastic cleaner for The Beast arrived so I'll experiment with that on Friday as well.

The Little Wives of India

After scanning a small photo for Mary, I began scanning the book which is intended for an inter-library loan. It's titled The Little Wives of India and from what I've skimmed, gives a heartbreaking account of Indian child-brides in the early 20th century.

The Beast is scanning the book very well; the scratching and dust on the glass don't seem to be affecting the photo quality and I have been able to capture all the text on each page despite the very small margins near the binding. I've scanned about 60 pages out of 130.

Wednesday

Today I finished scanning and editing the WU Sustainability magazine which is in the "Sustainability" folder in Archives Scans.

I also printed out a couple of photos for Mary which may need to be redone if the dimensions are not correct. After printing, I needed to replace several color cartridges in the printer and we are out of and running low on a couple colors so I sent a supply order to Chris.

Sustainability Magazine

I've scanned half of the WU Sustainability magazine but I won't be able to finish it until Wednesday. If it needs to be done as soon as possible, I might be able to come in tomorrow afternoon. The sustainability magazine shouldn't take too long though and then I'll start experimenting with scanning the little ILL book on The Beast.

Friday

Today I got The Beast ready to scan my next project, a tiny Inter-Library Loan book. I replaced the arms and tried to clean the glass however, it was very difficult to get it completely streak-free. I've tried multiple methods on it but nothing seems to work perfectly. When I focus the cameras on Monday, hopefully I'll be able to tell if the cleanliness of the glass will interfere with the scans or not. There are also several paper dust particles from the Kappa Sigma scrapbook that will take a while to remove entirely. I've gotten the majority of the debris but the dust has stuck to the scanning bed and all the little crevices around the metal and glass plate cover.

Kappa Sigma Scrapbook Scanning Finished

Today I completed editing all the scans for the Kappa Sigma scrapbook. I was able to select an option to keep the original file names in BookEditor so I re-processed the batch.

Now both the jpegs and tifs have the correct file names with the page number and an "A," "B," "C," etc. if there are multiple scans due to the foldouts. If there was only one scan of the page then the original "L" or "R" has remained.

All the completed images are now in drobo > "Kappa Sigma Scrapbook" and there are individual folders for both the tif and jpeg files.

Monday, January 25, 2016

Monday

Today I continued to edit the Kappa Sigma scrapbook images and I think I can complete them on Wednesday. I also re-scanned the first Paulus foldout again and was able to capture the entire foldout in one image. I took two images and wasn't sure which one looked better so I put them in drobo>Temp named Foldout_1A and Foldout_1B. I also included .tif and .jpg formats of the images in the Temp folder.

Scrapbook File Format Question

Since I still have some questions about the Paulus scrapbook foldouts, today I focused on editing the Kappa Sigma scrapbook scans. I'm well over 3/4 of the way done with editing them in Photoshop however I realized I've been editing the JPEGs that were saved as default by BookDrive.

After some research online, I found out that it might have been better to export the files as TIFFs, edit those, and then convert the TIFFs to JPEGs in order to have high-quality of both file types. I know this project is time-sensitive so is this a problem? Do the final files need to be in TIFF and JPEG format or will the JPEGs suffice? If I should start over and edit all the TIFF files instead, I can maybe work some extra hours next week since I know they'd like this completed by the end of the month.

Also, I made the same mistake by editing the default JPEGs of the Paulus foldout scans. However, from the instructions, I understood that there were only three foldouts to be scanned so these will be much easier to export as TIFFs, re-edit, and then convert to JPEG. Are the Paulus foldout scans time-sensitive as well?

Paulus Scrapbook Foldouts

Today I concentrated on scanning the Paulus Scrapbook newspaper foldouts. I had some trouble fitting the scrapbook under the glass and capturing a full picture so I'll need to finish this project on Friday.

I put the JPEG images that I captured and edited today in drobo > Temp in a folder called "Paulus Foldouts." However, I may need to rescan most of them on top of the glass and I still need to convert them to TIFFs.

1940 Wallulah Update

I'm not working on the Wallulahs at the moment but 1940 is nearly complete. I need to rescan and/or edit some images where faces were cut off since the portraits are close to the binding.

Kappa Sigma Scrapbook Status

On Friday I finished scanning all the pages of the Kappa Sigma scrapbook. It was difficult to capture the entire cover (front and back) and there was some glare from the leather-like material so those scans will need probably need to be approved.

Today I continued to deskew and crop the images. As a rough estimate, I think I've edited around one-third of all the images so the project should be completed soon.
