12/7 Final Blog!

I finished up the Carson Grant pdf, showed Madolyn the Epson scanner and the projects I'm leaving unfinished for her, did some Football Programs, and returned everything to Archives!

This has been a wonderful job and I've so enjoyed helping out. Thank you Sara, Mary, Amber, Selicity, and Bill! I've learned a lot and I'm excited to use this experience in the future. Thank you for teaching me new things all the time!

Everyone have a wonderful winter break! I'm sure I'll see you around campus for a while longer.

Today I scanned the Carson Grant project for Lydia Saville, to be put in Academic Commons!

A couple of pages could look better, so I'll be re-scanning a few tomorrow then making it one big pdf.

Tomorrow is my last day!

In addition to finishing this Carson Grant project, I'll do some more work on the Football Programs, answer any of Madolyn's final questions, and make sure everything I'm currently working on is up-to-date, easy to find, and accessible to everyone x)

Today I trained Madolyn! She seems very excited and I'm sure she'll catch on great. The only problem was that instructions for using ABBYY were not available to us (we need access to the document).

She said she might come by while I work next week for any clarifying questions, but other than that she should be good to go!

Today I worked on scanning football programs with the remainder of my time.

I have next Thursday and Friday, then I'm all done!!!

I managed to finish the first box of Prof Craig's 35mm slides at 2400 dpi

There were 81 total I think, and the second box was about equal

Today I got productive again!

I finished Doreen's book (without verification), return the theatre programs to the archives after copying them to pdfs, finished half of Professor Craig's project for his history class in spring, and showed Connall how to use the ATIZ scanner!

I'll almost definitely finish Craig's slides by tomorrow, as long as I figure out how to scan the clunky plastic 35mm holders x)

Another short day! I talked with Professor Craig about how he wants his slides scanned, then did OCR for the dictionary

(He expressed some interest in having his findings become available to Archives since these slides will be accompanied by oral interviews etc., so I told him when he's ready he should talk to Mary or Amber about it)

Today I prepared the long red arms on the ATIZ scanner so Professor Pike could scan his 24x8" image. (He didn't show up, but it's ready if he does!)

Today I did OCR for the Wilbur Travel Journal, as well as some OCR for Doreen's dictionary. I also messed with the ATIZ scanner a bit with Bill.

It's basically working right now, though slowly. I should be able to get through the football programs on Thursday next week if it's still working then.

Today I finished the athletic photos, did a quick project for Advancement (a football program), scanned the Wilbur journal covers, and did some OCR for Doreen.

The right camera is still not working, but since I only had a few things,I just made do with the left.

Today I got a lot done!

The athletic photographs from Amber are just about done.

They would be finished, except the ATIZ right-side camera stopped working AGAIN while I was taking the last couple of pictures.

I didn't spend very much time problem-solving because it's just doing the same thing as before and I didn't think I'd be able to do much.

I also entered all those photos onto the spreadsheet, and did OCR with verification for some more of Doreen's book

Sorry I haven't been keeping up with the blog! I'll try to remember more often

Today I took a break from manual OCR on Doreen's dictionary (because wow it's taking forever!) and elected to do some scanning. 

I got through a good chunk of the athletic photos Sara and Amber discussed, and should finish them tomorrow.

I also found out that the Wilbur Travel book I've been assigned was already scanned in 2014! How convenient x). They did miss the front and back cover, but other than that it is identical to the physical copy I have. I will get those covers added, and then do OCR (hopefully also tomorrow).

I'll be staying until 5 tomorrow because I have some extra time

This is my last day of summer work!

Yesterday (I forgot to post) I scanned Doreens old english dictionary from the fault, and today I did OCR with verification for the first 30 pages 

Excited to maybe come in and work on it more next week, though I can pick it up anytime before November when Doreen needs it

It's been great working here all these months! Glad I could get so much done x)

Day 44

The ATIZ scanner worked today! Yay!

Today I scanned and sent back all the Hawaii Club albums (2009-10) and did OCR for the fixed commencement programs (almost all of them)

Day 43

Today I finished fixing the commencement programs! I'm not sure if they need to have OCR done over again, so I'll wait for Sara's word on that.

I'm also choosing images to mount for the Blettel negatives, and have up to Binder 4 done.

Bill tinkered with the ATIZ scanner a little more today and we think it's functional? I'll be testing it tomorrow to see if it goes smoothly

Day 42

Today I finally finished the Blettel negatives and returned them to archives!

I tried to use the ATIZ scanner for the first time since we got the new part, and it did not work ):

Hopefully we'll figure something out. I have the Hawaii club photos, Doreen's dictionary for her course, and I'm sure John Repplinger would like to finish scanning the albums he got part way through. Luckily there's nothing more pressing than that.

Today I fixed up the commencement program scans up until 1940, and will continue working on that next week.

I almost almost finished Binder 5 (the last of the negatives) today!

I'll be done by tomorrow morning, then move on to the Hawaii club photos, Doreen's course book, and then start on fixing the commencement scans!

Today I got about 1/3 of the way through Binder 5!

Hopefully the replacement part for the camera will arrive soon and I can scan Doreen's small book from the vault, as well as the project Mary suggested last week, before school starts x)

I'm very close to finishing Binder 4! I thought it might be done today, but some of the folders were 100+ negatives which slowed me down.

I've done some of the examples images for mounting, but it's faster to do the scanning and the selecting separately, so I'm going to wait until I finish Binder 5 to dedicate myself to that part

Today I pulled out the Epson scanner manual and figured out how to scan black and white negatives. I got through a lot of the first Blettel binder, and will continue it tomorrow. There are so many that I might just treat it as an ongoing project.

Today I scanned all the Willamette Song Books and started OCR for them

I also scanned a stray letter from the Wilbur box

Today I helped clean the digital production lab for the first hour, then finished scanning and OCR for Campix and Vanguard, then changed the ATIZ scanner to the red arms to do the oversized Collegians. I then returned the publications to archives and changed the arms back to blue

Day 19

I finished the Campus Capsules, did OCR, and gave them back to archives

I also started scanning the Campix and Vanguard publications

Day 18

Today I helped Doreen get some better pictures of the map in the back of L'OREGON.

I also finished scanning the "new" campus photos from box 19 and returned them to archives.

I then scanned the Campus Capsules from folder 3 (1969-1971), which I hope to finish and OCR tomorrow!

Day 17

Today I worked on the Box 19 "New" campus photos, and scanned from WP_2772 to WP_2892. The box looks to be almost done!

On Thursday I'll be helping Doreen get a better picture of the map at the end of l'Oregon, and will probably finish campus photos/scan Doreen's other book for the rest of Th and Fri.

Day 16

Today I started/finished Mary's project. There were two children's books by Helen Johnson, which I scanned on the ATIZ scanner (they're pretty long so I had to do some rotating etc. since I didn't want to try replacing the arms right now)

They turned out pretty well and are located in moh, Archives-Scans, PNAA, Keyser_Helen_Johnson.

I also started on the Willamette Campus photos "new box" which is Box 19, and I think doing those on the little OpticBook scanner should be just fine. I am scanning the back side of the ones which have writing.

I'll be out of town next week, back on Tuesday July 2nd! Then I will be here for the rest of the summer.

Day 15

I finally finished Doreen's book yesterday! I also finished OCR for Student Handbooks

Day 14

I did OCR with verification (with varying levels of success) on Doreen's book all day today, and still didn't finish x) oh well, I'll pick up tomorrow

We determined that the user of the Wallulah workflow has to be an admin, but in addition to that, when I was playing with settings today I found out that it wanted to process all jobs in a "batch" meaning that it wouldn't take anything to the Output until EVERYTHING was processed. This is why today and yesterday things often wouldn't show up in the Output until we closed all the jobs down, effectively ending the current batch and finishing it.

I changed it so it works like the Student Handbook flow and puts things through one at a time

I'll definitely be finishing that tomorrow, and probably starting/finishing Mary's job for the PNAA

Yesterday I worked on Doreen's book for most of the day, then helped fix the Wallulah workflow (which CAN read French)

Forgot to post yesterday! But I got a lot done.

All the missing pages for all Bulletins and Catalogs have been replaced and OCR-ed. There is only one (which is marked) where the pages were physically missing and I could not find another copy of the material that did have the missing pages.

I also started Doreen's project "L'Oregon," I scanned the whole thing with the ATIZ scanner and it exists in tif form under drobo > Doreen Course Books, so I'm hoping to OCR that on Tuesday once we figure out how.

In the meantime I've been OCR-ing Student Handbooks, which should be finished soon (I'm up to 1992)

Day 10

Today I finally made some good progress on replacing missing pages. I only have 4 CLA catalogs left to do, and the problem with those has been with finding the pages, rather than scanning them etc.

Everything else should have been replaced already!

I also did some OCR for student handbooks to pass the time, and now that the ATIZ cameras are working I might start Doreen's French book project this week, when I'm finished replacing those last 8-10 pages.

Day 9

Back from my two week break! Still trying to finish up those missing pages as soon as possible. Re-numbering, as I found out, is a very time-consuming and detailed process.

I've pulled a good chunk of the archival materials I need to re-scan, and I spent over an hour trying to get the right camera on the ATIZ scanner to work. If I can't get it first thing in the morning I'll just ask Sara to help.

Finally, I'm very excited about the projects I'll be doing to Doreen, which I'll get started as soon as I reach a good stopping point for the re-scanning.

I did OCR and page counting for the remaining CLA bulletins, as well as all the Atkinson business school catalogs and bulletins

I did OCR and page counting for bulletins from 1961 to 1972. I also moved around files for the Business and Law School catalogs so they are easier to work with this week.

The plan is to grab the incomplete CLA catalogs and bulletins so I can re-scan missing pages, do OCR and hopefully add them into the completed Processed files smoothly.

Today I finished OCR for CLA catalogs (kind of)! I still have to take the catalogs which are missing pages (1897, 1907, 1919, 1924, 1931, 1989, 1996, and 1999), re-scan those missing and add them to the correct files.

Next up, I will do OCR for bulletins from 1929-1972, taking note of any missing pages along the way.

This should keep me occupied through tomorrow, if not through much of next week.

Today I did OCR for Willamette Bulletins from the year 1936 to 1988, it went pretty smoothly but I found one bulletin (1984) which had 2 pages missing.

I've added that to the list I have of other missing pages so I can hopefully re-scan all at once this week.

On my last day here at the DPL, I continued to add the dimensions of the commencement programs to the spreadsheet.  I got to finish going through box 17.  Thank you all for giving me this opportunity, it's sad to have to leave after working here for a while, but I learned a lot during my time here.  I had a great time and I hope to see you all in the future.
