December 11

I finished stamping the Campus Photograph Collection folders! I think the next step is working on getting the photos online, but I will need Sara to help me with that.

After I finished stamping, I continued scanning Wallulahs.

December 6

I finished stamping a lot of boxes today. I'm fairly certain that I will be done by the time I leave for break. There's not much to tell about the process. It's pretty tedious. But it's also a little meditative, which is nice. Plus I like that I get to see all the photos.

December 4

I continued working on the final leg of the Campus Photographs Collection today and got to Box 8.

I also scanned a really old letter that the library has, which was pretty cool.

November 29

This morning I scanned some Beach letters and envelopes that were not in the Beach Letter collection. Rosemarie told me some really interesting things about his letters and the other letter collections we have at Willamette. It's amazing that we have letters from such important people in the library.

After that I kept on stamping for the Campus Photos collection and got through Box 5. It's a slower process than I thought it would be (partly because I get distracted looking at the pictures), but I'm pretty sure that I can get all of it done before I leave for Christmas break.

November 27

Now that all the photos are in place for the campus photograph collection, I am finally able to start stamping and labeling the folders! And the stamps are really fun to use so that's a plus.

I also did some scanning of the 1916 Walullah today. That one is only about halfway done, so I may try to finish that this week and stamp in between scans.

November 20

So the campus photographs were not completely done. But I think they are now! There were just some photos to scan and find on the Drobo drive.

Next week I can start (and hopefully finish) the stamping. It may be a longer process than I think it is at this point.

Have a good Thanksgiving!

November 15

The last box for the campus photos collection has been finished! All that is left is some final organizing and labeling for the boxes which I will do next week.

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

November 13

The campus photos project is moving along at a pretty slow pace. This last box of miscellaneous photos and negatives has such a random mix of photos that have been scanned, haven't been scanned, originals are present in another box, are negatives of photos in another box, etc. So it's taking longer than I thought it would.

Today I was only able to get through two folders. One of the folders contained negative strips of photos in Box 13. The negatives were all out of order, so it made labeling them difficult, but I believe that photos were accounted for. I put the negative sheets in a folder into Box 13 and they sit behind the prints of the negatives. Hopefully I will be able to make more progress on Thursday.

I also did some scanning for Mary today. And Rose Marie (who is always really nice and helpful for me) showed me where the campus photos boxes are kept in the archives so now I know where to find them!

Thursday, November 8, 2012

November 8

Today I continued with the campus photograph project. I spent the day on one folder because I was having trouble scanning the negatives and getting good images out of them. Sara and I figured out how to scan the negatives into positive photos, which made the rest of the process a lot easier and faster. Now I know what to do for that and hopefully I can finish the rest of the folders a lot faster. I am also going to update the Digitization Assistant Scanning info with how to scan negatives.

Thursday, November 1, 2012

November 1

I finished Box 15 today! All the photos and negatives are in order, labeled, and put into archival sleeves. There were a lot of leftover negative/photo sleeves that the archives don't need anymore, so I am going to see if the Photo Club on campus may want them.

The next task will be adding Box 16. Most of the photos are going to be scanned and added to the spreadsheet. Sara made notes of what should be done with each group of photos in the folders.

October 30

Today I continued working on the Willamette Photos project and I am almost done with Box 15! Once I finish this last folder I will need to go back and organize the folders into an order that will reflect the spreadsheet and the thumbnails on the drive. I also will need to put more photos and negatives into photo sleeves. I talked to Rosemarie about labels for the photo sleeves, and we decided that we would just label them with permanent marker for now until a better system can be developed.

I'm pretty happy with the progress I made today. Hopefully Box 15 will be done by Thursday.

Thursday, October 25, 2012

October 25

Today I scanned some pages of the Willamette (Wallamet until 1870) Bulletin for Mary. Then I worked on the Willamette Photo project. I got through folder 6. Folder 5 took me the majority of the time today as it was full of negatives that had to be put into sleeves.

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

October 23

Today I kept working on the campus photos project. There were some photos that I could not find on the Drobo drive that are in the folders. For now, those will go in the mystery folder, and hopefully they will turn up later. I didn't know what to do about folder 3, which is full of index cards. I think they were used to organize the photos before they were put on computers. The cards might be helpful later on when trying to identify people. Folder 4 was just negatives. Folder 5 is mostly full of pictures from Alumni Day 1983. A lot of them were stuck together so I decided to organize them into photo sleeves. I also received a scanning project from Mary which I will do on Thursday.

October 16

Today I started working on the Willamette Photos Project. I made it through folder one which had photos 2354-2447. All of the originals were found and I found one of the photos that was missing from the drive. There were about 15 photos that I did not find on the drive but they still fit with the pictures in folder one. Those photos (mostly outdoor program photos and campus life photos) were put in the mystery pile which will eventually end up in box 16 with everything else that still needs scanned. I started on the photos from folder two, which are mostly individual photos of faculty from the 1980s. The project isn't as horrible as I thought it was going to be as the pictures are easier to find on the drive than I originally thought. Plus, I really enjoy looking at the pictures.

October 11

Today I finished checking the 1941 Wullulah (with the exception a few pages I have a question about) and I got through page 101 of the 1916 Wullulah. Next week, I am going to start the campus photos project.

Tuesday, October 9, 2012

October 8

Today I continued scanning the 1916 Wullulah. I am about halfway done with that.

I continued reviewing the 1941 Wullulah. I end up having to do edits on most of the pages, mainly because of the moire on all the pictures. But I really enjoy going through the old yearbooks so I don't really mind.

Sara introduced me to the campus photographs project. I'm really glad I came in at the end of the project; it looks like a lot of work to get all of them in order. But I think I'm going to enjoy looking at the pictures and seeing WU life in the past.

Thursday, October 4, 2012

October 4

Today I kept scanning the 1917 Wullulah and got through page 71. I would have gotten farther, but while I was checking the 1941 Wullulah I noticed a lot of problems with it. So I abandoned the 1917 for a little bit to fix the major problem (there were some pages missing and because of that all the pages in the 20s and some in the 30s were not numbered correctly). I finally got that taken care of and then returned to the 1917.

Tuesday, October 2, 2012

October 2

Today I kept working on scanning the 1916 Wullulah through page 59. I also started reviewing the images from the same year. The images all look really good. I only had to fix a a few.

I also scanned some photos from another Wullulah as part of the project getting pictures and information for someone interested in the football team that was in Hawaii during Peal Harbor. I find it really interesting to be able to look back at all the old photos and newspapers from Willamette. Hopefully there will be more on Thursday.

September 27

Hello Everyone! Today was my first day as the new Digitization Assistant. I think that it will be really interesting working with all this history from Willamette. Hopefully I don't get too distracted by it all and actually get the work done.

Today, Sara introduced me to the scanner and the instructions to do it, and then I spent the rest of the morning figuring out the programs and scanning the 1916 Wullulah (I got to page 47). I also scanned an article from a September 1941 issue of the Collegian which was really cool to see.

See everyone Tuesday!

25 July

For my last day working in the Archives, I had a lot of sweets. I also made a last document explaining what I've done and what needs to be done with the campus photographs, and I then continued working on the campus photographs through to ~WP 0741.

Thank you everyone for this summer - I've learned so much and you've all been so incredibly kind. It really was a great experience.

24 July

I continued working on the Campus Photograph cross-referencing today - I finished box 4 and brought boxes 1-4 back to the archives. I am now almost done with box 5 at approx WP 0608. There have been a few hiccups in the process, like loose or unscanned photos, but I am dealing with them systematically so my edits should be easy to follow. I can explain them best in person with the files during tomorrow's meeting - for my last day working in the Archives! :(

See you all tomorrow!

23 July

Today, I returned to the campus photographs and got through to WP 0500. This means that I am close to done with Box 4 and will have to make another trip up into archives to return the first four and pick up the next four boxes!

Friday, July 20, 2012

20 July

I returned to labeling the folders and photos of the Campus Photograph Collection - I am now at WP 0320. I have started coming across some problems, such as near copies of photos that were never scanned and so they now have to be scanned and then filed in new folders under new names. However, I am keeping notes on these "near copies" that refer back to their "originals." For example, the folder for WP 0293 had three photos, two of which were in fact WP 0293, but one of which looked like but was different from WP 0293. Because it needs to be scanned and then can't be held in the WP 0293 folder, the extra photo has been renamed WP 2612, the very last photo in the Collection.

19 July

I started going through the boxes of the campus photographs today and marking the folders and photos with the correct numbers. So far, I have done WP 0001 - WP 0174. There are a few folders that I have kept outside of the boxes in order to follow up or do more work. Each of these folders holds a note that explains my decision to pull it.

18 July

I finished working on Paulus and Campus Photographs today. To finish, I edited the online subject titles of the Paulus Collection and the Postcard Collection so that the subjects matched those that I developed for the Campus Photographs. I then attempted to discover whether or not I could find the Campus Photograph photos that are listed but not included in the digital database, but as they are not in order or labelled correctly in the archives, this project would take much longer than I will be working here. So I have not returned to scanning yearbooks, starting with 1916.

Tuesday, July 17, 2012

17 July

I spent today with my several lists for the campus collection. I read through some documents about the President's residences, focusing on the Duniway House and the Lincoln Street/Bishop Home. Then I went up into archives with Rose Marie and we got her copy of DACS so that I could standardize the names of people - so that rather than "Hon. Ailshie, James F.", I wrote "Ailshie, James F., Hon." Basically, I put all of the surnames after the full name and a comma. Then, I applied the changes to the googledoc excel sheet.

Tomorrow, I need to begin editing a section of the Paulus collection. I told Sara earlier that I needed to apply the building subject titles that I developed for the Campus Collection to the Paulus Collection, and so I went to work applying them to the slides that have not been uploaded, starting at PLS90B186. My attempt was unnecessary, though, because all of the photos past PLS90B186 are portraits (so there are no buildings and, therefore, no building subject titles to add). So my task tomorrow is to edit the subjects for the slides that have already been uploaded.

16 July

I spent today working on a series of research projects. The biggest one was my list of building construction dates, which I have almost completed with the help of Mary, Rose Marie, Roger Hull, and Barby Dressler, who I have been emailing for TIU information. I talked with Dick Breen in the Law Library earlier and he gave me a lot of info on the Collins Legal Center and Gatke Hall. I also visited the Admissions office and asked Marty (?) at the front desk about the dates of construction for Chi Omega->W.I.S.H. / (East Side)->Admissions. She is going to ask around the office tomorrow, as a couple of older employees were not there today.

At the end of my shift, I spent about a half hour with the yearbooks, skimming the "Living Orgs" sections to see the transformation of different houses between greek and regular housing, focusing on Alpha Phi, Chi Omega, Kappa Sigma, Phi Delt, and Beta, as those are the ones that have moved the most. I have found all I need on Alpha Phi->Shepard, but not Chi Omega, Kappa, or Beta - and Phi Delt is the really confusing one. The rest of this small project should not take very long.

13 July

I reviewed a good portion of the Campus Photographs today, identifying the more difficult faces and buildings. I also did a once-over of the Paulus collection to make sure that nothing was out of the ordinary, and I edited a couple sheets so that they all follow the same format. Additionally, I edited the list of Buildings that I have up on the googledocs and I started a new document that will have the Building names but will combine them with dates and show the progression of the buildings as they have come to be known by other names (also accompanied by dates). Finally, I wrote an architectural history of Waller Hall, which is available as a googledoc.

12 July

I finished my first round of the Campus Photos today. However, it is not finished - the slides that I have to return to require more research, or they are numbered and described, but not in the database yet, so I will have to scan them.

After I finished the first round before lunch, I returned to do research on Waller Hall. After reading sections of the Gatke and Gregg Chronicles, I then started building a history of Waller in the attempt to 1) discover when the Waller did or did not have a southern elevation and 2) find out when the 2nd Waller, which had the Mansard Roof, did or did not have an ugly tower on top of it. In order to build this history, I am going through and cross-referencing the dates and photos of Waller that are in the campus photographs collection. Once I've finished doing that, I will look through the yearbooks and bulletins as well to get more precise dates and explanations.

11 July

I returned to the Campus Photographs again, first by focusing on the photos of 1980s faculty and then by looking through some sports photos, dormitory photos, and then the Mill Stream and finally the sesquicentennial. I was still not able to identify all of the 1980s faculty, but I got a good half of them and they seem to be going in a pseud-alphabetical order, so I'll return to the attempt tomorrow. I also would like to look through some Collegians from 1992 so as to know whether there was a sesquicentennial ball - and if so, who was there, and was it in the Capitol Building? I believe that it is the sesquicentennial ball, mostly because Hudson is there and so is the Waller Hall cake that was made for the anniversary.

10 July

I continued working on the Campus Photographs today, this time getting to approx ~ WP2280. After attempting to discover who a guest speaker was, I eventually had to give up my search - I believe that she was either a professor here or a guest speaker invited by the (ca1970s) Minority Student Union, as several members of that group are seen with her. I then continued with my regular process until I ran across a large number of photographs of faculty from the mid-80s. I spent a lot of time identifying these faculty, and I still have not been able to finish. The difficulty is that the Walllulahs printed after the mid-70s tended to avoid standard photos of faculty - instead, they grouped faculty by department, or allowed them to be in conversation with each other (and therefore have their backs to the camera). In many cases, faculty are listed but not shown. I will return to this research tomorrow morning.

9 July

I began today by writing some more captions, but I had the thought that my job may get easier by looking at the original photos kept in archives. Mary helped me get the photos and we pulled them out and I realized that they were not in any sort of helpful order - they are organized by subject, whereas I had hoped they would be organized by file number. I will be returning to these boxes once I finish labeling the photos in the digital database. The hope is that I will be familiar, or at least recognize, every photo in the collection so that I can look at the original photo and more quickly find it's digital copy. This will allow me to begin labeling and ordering the original copies so as to mirror the digital database. But first things first! I measured the photographs and negatives and sent those measurements to Mary so that we could order appropriately sized sleeves to store them all in!

Then I returned to making/editing captions. In the afternoon, I had a very nice visit with Roger Hull, who helped me to identify Art and Art History alumni, professors and patrons from a collection of photos of the 1991 Art Reunion that happened in concert with WU's sesquicentennial. He was able to I.D. all but a few people, so I spent the rest of the day updating the excel sheet to match the notes from our conversation. I will continue this portion tomorrow (starting with WP 1735 and going to 1750).

In addition to this project, there is the issue of the Theatre Reunion, which was also done in concert with the sesquicentennial. I will return Chris Harris' email tomorrow - he responded to say that he will be able to help I.D. individuals, places, awards, etc after he returns from England on July 25th. I may not be able to meet with him in person, as the 25th or 26th may be my last day working in the Archives, but I will be sure to leave notes for the meeting to make it go as smoothly as possible.

Friday, July 6, 2012

6 July

I returned to the Campus Photograph again today - I'm almost done with my first run of the collection! Once I finish, I'll have to go back through and visit the highlighted portions of the excel sheet (red if missing from digital database, purple if in need of more research).

Today, I had to fix up what I could not do yesterday, as we lost the campus wireless network around noon. So I uploaded the information that I collected offline yesterday, which took quite a while. I am now at about WP 2030. Among the photos that I researched today were a series showing President Pelton's inauguration and a series showing students hanging out on the Mill Stream during the 80s, before the Mill Stream was "remodeled."

I also emailed around for some help - Shanel told me that Kylie Pine, who works at the Heritage Center, would be able to help me to identify some Greek pillars that used to stand to the east of the University Library (now Smullin Hall). The pillars stood in a semi-circle and seemed to serve an arena-like purpose, so I have seen photos of May Day Queens and mini outside theatre performances in the semi-circle.

3 July

Today, I got to WP ~1780 in the Campus Photograph Collection. I did quite a lot more research today, much of it with the 1991 Wallulah because I discovered a huge series of photos of the sesquicentennial celebrations. I still have not seen the end of this series, as there were apparently quite a lot of activities that year. I also did some research by skimming through the "Chronicles of Willamette," as well as emailing people across campus. Cheryl Todd in Residence Life gave me a detailed history of Northwood and Cascadia Halls and I also emailed Roger Hull to ask about the 1991 Art Reunion and Chris Harris about the 1991 Theatre Reunion. Hopefully they will respond soon!

2 July

Right back to Campus Photographs! I am now at approximately WP 1580, in the midst of a very long series of photos of Delta Gamma and Pi Phi students in the Sesquicentennial parade. Some of my research for today included looking up a few senior men in the class of 1933, finding out the stories behind a few more pioneers who accompanied Jason Lee, transcribing a letter by an early missionary describing the condition of Oregon and asking for someone (a potential bride?) to sail over soon, and looking up the origins of some photos from the Holocaust (particularly the one that depicts a group of Jews on a street corner in Lithuania). Why do we have those last ones? No idea.

29 June

I returned to Campus Photographs this morning, first by completing the list of people who appear as subjects in the Campus Photographs collection, and then by incorporating that list into the full Subject List (which I will upload to googledocs tomorrow).

Then I continued down the line again, researching as needed - for example, I found a couple of photos of the 1988 WU radio program, so I learned that they were called KWU. However, I do not know if they are at all related to the contemporary WU Wire.

28 June

As the Campus Photographs project gets larger and larger, there are more and more subjects to account for, besides buildings alone. I felt the need to document the subjects that I am using thus far, so I did - this list includes places and events. Then I started adding people, and I am still in this process because I have to keep the people on the master list and in a separate list of their own. The Personal Name list will eventually document all identifiable people in the campus photographs collection, along with any information I have of them and the WP #'s that they appear in. This way, we'll be able to focus on less well-identified subjects and do targeted research on those photos in particular.

In addition to this project, I continued working down the list, getting to almost WP 1400. I also did some research in the attempt to discover what "Chapel March/Spectacle Day" was, but, though I found the photo for it in the 1920 Wallulah, there was little information or even reference to the photo as "Chapel March/Spectacle Day."

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

27 June

I started with Campus Photographs today and quickly ran into a couple of research questions - why was there a plaque for FH Grubbs stuck in a maple tree outside of Eaton Hall (thanks, Chanel!)? And what was the Chresto Cottage (thanks, Mary!)? In other words, when I wasn't working on campus photographs this morning, I was reading 1916-1922 Wallulahs for information about the Chrestomatheans and Chrestophilians. I also added a few new building names to the list - of course, Chresto Cottage, but also, Chemawa Indian School, the Oregon Mission Manual School, and the Hallie Ford Museum of Art. I am still not sure how to label the Admissions Office, though. Would it be "Chi Omega Sorority House (Eastern side) -> W.I.S.H.: Willamette International Studies House (Eastern side) -> Office of Admissions"?

26 June

I believe I forgot to write a blog yesterday, so I will summarize my Monday and Tuesday here.

I have continued work on the Campus Photographs. I am now almost to WP 1200. In order to make it this far, I have had to do more research in the past couple of days, including reading about the history of the Victory Bell and learning more about Glee and certain practices surrounding those competitions!

A big project this afternoon was working on the building names list. You will see that I have uploaded and shared this updated document on googledocs (Sara, Mary, and Rose Marie - if anyone else wants to see, I can certainly add you!). My edits reflect my attempts, thus far, to standardize the subject titles in the campus photograph collection. A couple of the subjects, such as the Antoinette and Mark O Hatfield Fountain and Hudson Hall, have not yet come up in the campus photograph collection, but I suspect they will soon enough.

June 22

Today, I returned to work on the Campus Photographs and I am now on photo WP0892. For a short period, I helped Cherri Miles to find photographs of the Collins Legal Center for the upcoming celebration in honor of Richard Breen/Brene (?). She didn't find any photos of him, but I did send her some jpegs of Collins Legal Center that she requested.

I also found a really interesting collection of 39 photographs of Salem and Willamette between 1800 and 1940. They were all apparently kept in the same folder and they seem to have been worked on by some other archivists at some point, as they are all captioned. One caption might give away the time period when the photos were worked on - for a photo of the Reed Opera House, the caption says "This is Reed's Opera house in 1888. It is now Miller's Dept Store." So I need to research and find out when the Reed Opera House was known as Miller's Department Store. By the way, this is WP0871.

21 June

I followed your advice, Sara, and spent today on the Campus
Photographs. I've gone through Eaton, Doney, the Fine Arts Building,
the Navy Training Graduation photos (August 14 1944!), the Mill
Stream, and the Putnam UC, among others. I learned that the UC used to
have those massive stairs and the spiral staircase till only a couple
of decades ago, and, (maybe) that the Bishop Health Center used to be
located where Rogers Music Hall is now, so they must have torn down
the entire building to put up the new one! I'm now at Campus Photo
#701 and I will be starting right back to it in the morning!

Wednesday, June 20, 2012

20 June

I continued working on the campus photographs this morning until Mary
asked me to burn a couple of CD's of photographs of Norma Paulus. I
also met Jennifer Paulus earlier and we talked for a minute about the
Paulus project, which I returned to in the afternoon.

I got confused after lunch. I started my next step with the Paulus
collection, that is, I started uploading new photos via Project
Client. First, I was really confused because a button wasn't working
and I thought I didn't have access, but really I just hadn't entered
the Project page so I couldn't add or edit anything within the project
yet. This took me a bit of time, and once I got past it I ran into
more small problems. I learned a good process for adding photos, and I
have approved a few photos online. However, I do not have access to
delete any photos...and I need to because I messed one up and uploaded
it twice. Tomorrow, I'll ask Bill for authorization to delete files.

18-19 June 2012

I forgot to write a blog for yesterday, but I did the same things as I
did today!

I began my morning with the Campus Photographs collection. I am now
somewhere near WP0350, so I have looked at photographs of GSM, Collins
Legal Center, Collins Science Center, Doney Hall, and Eaton Hall.

In the afternoon, I continued with Paulus. In the past two days, I
have written a list of all of the names of Paulus's clients, that is,
those people who sat for his portraits and paid him so that he could
pay for his Willamette education. I wrote this list and then rewrote
it, and then rewrote it again today. Once I made sure that the list 1)
was alphabetical, 2) did not repeat itself, 3) had no typos, and 4)
accurately reflected what was written on the actually slides or in the
Ted Paulus interview, I then synced my list with the one online. After
that, I updated the column for "Personal Names" in the googledoc sheet
so the names of all of the Paulus clients would be uploaded as search
terms, once they are uploaded via Project Client.

15 June

This morning, I finished scanning the 1915 Wallulah and filled out its
info in the excel worksheet. I then abandoned the scanner and started
working on Campus Photographs - I think I was able to make it through
about twenty of them before lunch.

After lunch, I made sure that all of the information on the Paulus
Collection was in the spreadsheet. Then I started updating a Paulus
publication that listed the client names and the photos that they are
found in. I know that Roger Hull, an art professor in the 90's, had
made the list in order to 1) more easily find clients who appear in
more than one photo and 2) be able to contact potential family members
in the Salem area and mail them copies of all photos that their family
members may be in.

14 June

I started the 1915 yearbook today and was able to scan ~80 pages. I
also spoke with Alice, who had fixed the page in the 1914, which I
then scanned. She then took the 1914 to fix it up a bit before
returning it to stacks.

In the afternoon, I finished cross-referencing the Paulus Collection,
with a total of 13 boxes. I am now uploading the data, which I
hand-wrote, into the excel worksheet. Once I am done with that, which
shouldn't take too long, I will be able to write a quick summary of
what is or is not missing.

Wednesday, June 13, 2012

13 June

I finished scanning the 1915 (pub. '14) this morning, but I have to
return to one page that felt out - a photograph fell off of the page
and then the page fell out of the book (fantastic!), so Alice is
fixing it. Once I get the page back, I can scan it in and input the
1915 into the excel worksheet.

After lunch, I finished cross-referencing the last of the PLS90's and
began the PLS98's. I then finished the first box of the PLS98's and
I'm almost done with the second box. When I finish that tomorrow, I'll
have to check with Mary - I can't remember if there's another box in
her office or not...in any case, I'm almost done cross-referencing the
Paulus collection...

Tuesday, June 12, 2012

12 June

This morning, I finished another good 70 pages of the 1915 Wallulah,
so I'm up around page130.

In the afternoon, I kept scanning some Paulus slides - there were
about twenty of them that had not been in the digital collection. I
also reorganized some slides that were misplaced and then continued
cross-referencing the digital and original collections.

11 June

I started today by returning to the 1915 Wallulah (published in 1914
by the '15 class) - I got to +/- page60. The work went pretty
smoothly, except for a hiccup where a page was ready to fall out and
the photograph that belonged on that page had fallen off, so I gave
the page and photograph to Alice so she could repair them. I'll get
that back and reattach it tomorrow, and then scan and save the page as
something like "Page# - Insert."

In the afternoon, RoseMarie asked me to help her with some of the
Waltz Family Papers, so I deleted a couple of doubled pages, scanned a
few more and moved some around to make everything accurate. I then
added these changes to the website through Project Client. Once I
finished working on the letters, I returned to the Paulus Collection
for the last 45 minutes. I am not quite done scanning box 7, but I
have finished cross-referencing the box.

It seems that we have a lot of missing slides, unless if I find them
hiding in a box somewhere. I haven't yet, and I am pretty sure I have
all of the boxes accounted for. I have descriptions for some of these
73 slides, so they must have existed at some point, but we seem to
have lost them. I'll continue cross-referencing and scanning tomorrow,
and hopefully those 73 will just be misplaced somewhere later in the
boxes!

8 June

A late blog, again - my goal for this week is to be better at blogging on time!

Friday morning, I finished the last of the 1913 yearbook that I was
working on. Till now, I've referred to it as the 1914, but it was
published in 1913 by the class of '14, which had confused me before.
In any case, I finished the '13 yearbook (published by the class of
'14) and I have now begun scanning the '14 (published by the class of
'15). I also checked the images and fixed inconsistencies in the '13
(the one I just finished), so it should be ready to be uploaded
online!

In the afternoon, I continued cross-referencing Paulus images until I
ran into a large group of photos that need to be scanned. There are at
least 40 images that were never digitized, so I'll be spending a lot
of this next week working on those. When I finish those ~40
photographs, I'll have to start a search for the next ~60, because
those ones either never existed, were lost, broken, or never accounted
for. In any case, I haven't seen them yet! So hopefully they turn up
somewhere (if they ever existed at all!)!

7 June

So I'm apparently really bad at remembering to write on my blog at the
end of my shift! I remembered late last night, so here I am doing it
in the morning!

Yesterday morning, I learned how to scan the Paulus glass plate
negatives. Then I worked more on the 1914 Wallulah until 11:30, when I
met with Sara and Mary to talk over plans for the next few weeks. Then
I returned to the Wallulah till lunch!

After lunch, I got back to Paulus and quickly found a group of three
plates, PLS90C189 - PLS90C191, that had not been scanned, so I put
them up online and edited one so that it wasn't blue-ish anymore. I
spent the rest of my shift going through the rest of box 10!

6 June

I started back with the 1914 Wallulah and got to ~page60.
Unfortunately, the pages come out badly if I don't hold the book down,
so I've had to take a break editing the 1912. Maybe I'll return to the
1912 once I finish '14.

In the afternoon, I went right to work on the Paulus collection - I'm
up in the PLS90C180's now, so I've done more than half of the
cross-referencing and I'm getting closer to the group of photos that
have been lost, never existed, were mis-numbered, or not scanned. I
will probably crack that puzzle sometime in the next week!

June 4

This morning, I started the 1914 Wallulah and got a good 55 pages in
while continuing my edits of the 1912. The 1912 seems to have some
problems - page31 was mis-numbered "page301" and another page, later
in the yearbook, had not been properly cropped. There were a couple of
pages missing, and consequently, the rest of the book needs to be
re-numbered. So I am working on that while scanning pages of the 1914;
it's taking some time reorganizing, but I'm making progress!

I returned again to cross-referencing the digital and original Paulus
collections. I'm now at +/- PLS90B100 and I decided to start noting,
on the printed page, which slides are large, small, or "small-long". I
should be done with Box 4 fairly quickly tomorrow afternoon.

P.S. ~ Thanks to Rose Marie for the cake and Joni for the cookie! They
were delicious!

1 June

This morning, I scanned the 1906-07 (combined) Wallulah and was able
to return it to the archives. While I worked on the 1906-07, I also
worked on the 1912, which I realized had mores on most of the photos.
I am still currently going through the 1912, blurring where necessary
- I think I'm on page 101, now, and I should be able to finish that
tomorrow. Also tomorrow, I'll begin scanning the 1913, which I already
have ready for me at the desk!

After lunch, I worked again on making sure that the Paulus digital
library matched the original collection. I found a couple small
discrepancies, such as when PLS90A299 and PLS90A300 had been switched
during scanning - I could rename the digital file to match the
original, or vice versa, but I don't know which method would have the
least impact on records. In any case, most every other slide is fine
and I am now a third of the way through Box 4/10.

31 May

This blog is coming a day late, but I still remember what I did!!

Yesterday morning, I finished scanning the 1905 Wallulah and then
retrieved the 1906-07 Wallulah from the archives, with Mary's help,
and scanned the cover page.

In the afternoon, I continued cross-referencing the Paulus digital and
original collections to make sure that they match. I am now halfway
through the second box of slides and I've only run across one problem,
where a slide had not been scanned because it was a duplicate of
PLS90A009. It made sense not to copy an exact duplicate, so I left it
alone. Later on, I found it interesting that the slides, which were
previously all of the same size, were all suddenly of a different
size. About 75% of the second box, in fact, are all on smaller glass
slides. I believe that these most likely came from a different camera,
and then I remembered that Robert and Otto Paulus did not own the same
style of camera, according to Ted Paulus. With a little research, I
may be able to find out which camera, and photographer, made the
smaller slides.

29 May

I spent my morning with the 1905 Wallulah - I think I did about 60
pages, so I've finished the class pictures and literary societies!

After lunch, I went through the rest of the box of Paulus information
that Mary gave me. This involved skimming a transcription of an
interview with Ted Paulus and then reading through Roger Hull's and
his students' notes from the early 90's when they started this work.
This helped me to verify some spelling errors and get more specific
data on first names, residences, and occupations of Otto Paulus'
clients. As I finished reading through this box early, I then started
looking through the PLS98 database, identifying this and that where I
could. If there are any documents written on PLS98, those would really
help me as I move forward with it! Those photos that I have seen are
less likely to be in the Wallulahs, so I'm having trouble identifying
them.

23 May 2012 Cross-referencing!

This morning, I edited the scans that I have made of the 1903 and 1905
Wallulahs, and then I worked more on the 1903. So far, I have gotten
past page 100 and I have checked every photo for imperfections.

I returned again to Paulus for the afternoon, focusing on
cross-referencing with printed and written records of the collection.
As a result of this work, I will have to edit a good number of the
captions on slides that have already been uploaded online, but I am
apparently going to learn how to do that tomorrow!

22 May 2012

As usual, I continued working on the yearbooks this morning. I chose
to work on the 1903, as it is from archives and I'd like to get that
back asap, whereas the 1905 is from the stacks (so it can wait!). I
got up past the 40's for the 1903 yearbook, and was able to go back
through and check for mores on every page - I had to blur the pixels
on most of the photos, but they turned out all right!

After lunch I went right to work on the Paulus collection. I finished
going through the list of client names, so that most of the PLS90 C
001-250 section is identified. There are a good number that I still
have to work out, but I got most of them. When I finished with that
list, I found a list of faculty and students with their PLS #'s, so I
set to work making sure that the list and the excel document matched
correctly.

21 May 2012

I began today with the 1905 Wallulah, which I have now scanned up to
page ~45, if I remember correctly.

I also continued working on the Paulus Collection. Mary gave me some
resources to look through, so I've been cross-referencing and making
sure that Otto Paulus's clients are correctly identified throughout
the collection. I have done a good 3 1/2 pages of these clients (in an
alphabetical list compiled by Roger Hull).

18 May 2012

I finished scanning the 1990 Wallulah earlier today! So now I get to
work on the 1905 Wallulah, which has a really beautiful cover and some
very unfortunate caricatures of Native American and Black characters
on the first few pages. But beyond that, it looks like a really
beautiful book!

I also continued work on the Paulus slides. I continued compiling two
lists of photos, one for photos that include children and the other
for photos concerning the canneries. However, I'll be working on both
lists for a bit longer because I keep finding more and more photos to
add to the lists!

As I've looked at more of the Paulus collection, I realized that I am
now looking exclusively at portraits. All of the subjects have posed,
and many of them are in the same room. For those photographs in the
room with the flowers on a pillar next to the window, I've begun
adding an asterisk at the end of the photo title for easier
identification. However, I have reason to believe that whether or not
the flowers and pillar are in the photo, almost all of the photos that
I have seen in the past day and a half were taken inside Paulus' home
or studio. Intriguingly, many of the photos were taken in 1915, which
leads me to suggest that his vocation in portraiture may have helped
him pay for his Willamette education.

17 May 2012

I scanned a lot of the 1990 Wallulah today, I think I'm at about page
207 now, so I should be able to finish it tomorrow. Apparently it
rained throughout the graduation ceremony that year, so everyone was
under umbrellas! :(

I also worked more on the Paulus collection. I compiled a list of
photographs of children for Mary, and then I started identifying more
photos and found a lot more photographs of families and children. The
thing is that families can be really difficult to identify because I'm
relying on the Wallulahs. I've tried seeing if some of the parents are
professors or students, but they may be family friends of Otto Paulus.
In any case, there are a lot of them, they all seem to be photographed
in the same room (Paulus' home?), and I do not know any of their
names!

16 May 2012

Today I began again with the 1990 Wallaluh, but I had to redo the
pages that I did yesterday because I had done them at 300 dpi. So I
redid those ones, and was able to finish pages 120-157 at the correct
600 dpi. The last picture I scanned was really funny, the guy had a
silly smile on :)

When I came back from lunch, I returned to the Paulus photos, which
today consisted of a long series of football photos, some of them
Willamette and many of them junior high and high school photos. Then
there was a really long streak of photos of the Northwest Fruit
Products Co. and their products, mainly, loganberry juice. Also called
Loju, it was a popular beverage at the time, as evidenced by its
constant demand in L.A. and the photos of it being shipped to Tacoma,
WA, Wichita, KS, and St Paul, MN. Having researched a little, someone
named Paulus was very involved in Salem canneries in the early- to
mid-1920's. I think they were probably related, which would account
for Otto Paulus' desire to document the companies activities.

Babies and Cars

I began work today and learned how to 1) scan and photoshop yearbooks,
saving them into drobo and 2) research and identify Paulus photos. I
worked on the 1990 Wallulah, starting at page 122 and finishing 152 by
the time I left for lunch. I then turned to the Paulus photographs -
the first of which was marked incorrectly!! It was not the actual WU
football team, it was a group of intramural sophomores! So then there
were a lot of unidentifiable houses (was it the Dewdrop Inn?) that
I'll hopefully get to look at again, and then a long stream of old
cars, and then really adorable kids with ukelele's and violins, or
hanging out on swings with kittens. I believe that the Paulus brothers
spent some time taking photos for parents and schools, cause there
were quite a few classrooms, music classes, and posed bicycle photos -
and considering when the photos were taken, I doubt that the kids
could have been moving very quickly on their bikes (though I am not at
all an expert of the history of photography)!

Welcome!

Welcome to the first post to the Archives Summer Intern work blog.
